VISIT TO MBWA WA

The crew visited our partner organization, Mbwa Wa Animal Rescue & Veterinary Clinic, in Arusha and met with the director, Jens Fissenbert, and the chief veterinarian and veterinary interns. The team provided support to the Mbwa Wa staff in the areas where it is most needed. This included tasks ranging from daily care for shelter animals to essential surgeries. Additionally, the team provided educational resources and tutorials to assist the staff.

RESEARCH

PSCTP’s founder, Dr. Kimberly Shriner, and Austrian veterinarian, Dr. Igor Loncaric, will collaborate on a One Health research project alongside Tanzanian principal investigators to evaluate antimicrobial resistance in animals and humans. Study areas include Arusha township, the Ngorongoro conservation area, and the Serengeti National Park. The June 2025 veterinary crew will assist our Tanzanian colleagues in this new and interesting project.

MEETING OUR NEW SCHOLAR

While visiting Mbwa Wa, the veterinary team met with PSCTP’s newest scholar, Dr. David Junior! Dr. Junior is the first recipient of PSCTP’s latest program, the Masters of One Health scholarship, which will begin this fall. The introduction of this degree is particularly timely because it focuses on research related to microbes in both animals and humans. Dr. Junior will also help the team collect samples during their time together since his research area aligns with the microbiology research study the team is working on.
