In late January, the WHO and CDC announced an outbreak of the deadly Marburg Virus in northern Tanzania. To ensure the safety of our team members, the February 2025 trip has been canceled. PSCTP’s founder, Dr. Kimberly Shriner shares these details:
“It is with disappointment and sadness that we announce the postponement of our February 2025 trip to Tanzania. We have spent over a year of preparation for this trip with academic, clinical, research, and collaborative activities scheduled during our two weeks in Northern Tanzania. The convergence of two serious and unforeseeable events has precluded our safe travel to East Africa. As a Pasadena-based nonprofit, our organization was deeply affected by the recent January fires. Almost simultaneously, WHO and CDC Africa were mobilized to assist Tanzania with a new outbreak of the deadly hemorrhagic Marburg virus. Global health work can be challenging under the best of circumstances. The safety and health of our American and African volunteer teams are paramount. Our work will continue as it always does every day of the year. Until we return to Tanzania, we will continue supporting and communicating with our scholars, exploring research opportunities in One Health, and sharing the knowledge, compassion, and joy we experience working together during these challenging times.”
