This was my first time to Africa with the Phil Simon clinic as a nurse. Today we went to Saint Elizabeth hospital and I got to do intake of the children. They were so sweet and calm. What surprised me the most was how many burn scars we saw. Most of the children were burned from home cooking when they were between 1 and 2 years old and as these children grow, the scar tissue does not grow with them resulting in contracted hands that don’t open and other mobility problems. One child had difficulty walking because of the scar tissue in her leg. These beautiful children with their innocent eyes wide open while being cradled in their mother’s loving arms were so calm. It was such an honor to offer help to them today, such a gratifying day.
